‘Steve’s under no illusions. He knows his ma fights every day with something he can’t see. He thinks in a way it’s as if, when his father died in the War, his ma was forced into a War herself, a kind of conscript to some lonely combat that nobody else can reach.’

Art from the first 2 chapters of love among the ruins, Stucky Sleeping Beauty fusion. (Eerie historical psychiatry, angst w/ happy ending). https://archiveofourown.org/works/16929495

(Just for reference really, I am sure you all know this! :D But some of my author collabs have asked me how to post images and so I have written out how I personally do it here so I can link to this page in answer).

(I did try using style etc tags to resize but my ao3 kept messing it up, so now I use CSS for that, see below)

On DreamWidth I use this, which resizes it helpfully:

<b><center><img src="LINK" style="max-width: 70%; height: auto; " alt="" /></center></b>

Using a work skin so it appears correctly on phones

I ADORE this functionality, it makes my life SO much easier. I am indebted to @notlucy, @pineai_noir and @albymangroves for this.

Choose SKINS from the ao3 preferences. (On phone, it is in top right of screen).
Create a site skin and name it something, e.g. I call mine “Basic 90% skin”
Then it will show you ‘My Site Skin’s page’
Then in the CSS box type in this code:

Then go to, or create, your fic creation or edit page. (If it has chapters, then go to the main page with all the tags etc.)

Click ‘skins’ and choose the skin you named.

Save the fic.

The skin will remain in your work skins list and you can use it on any fic in future too, without having to do all the code again.

(You need to select that skin from the list every time you want to post a fic using it -- it does not default apply to any fic, you have to select it for each that you wish to use it.)

I hope it is useful :)

Yearning romance, Shrinkyclinks.

“Complete and Radiant, Sealed By Fire"

medically-induced soul bond (yeah, I didn’t expect that either!), emotional sex, painstakingly-researched military tac pants fly access, tenderness.

5k, explicit.

The dream begins the night after Steve’s first treatment. It’s an asthma attack, he’s fighting to breathe, but the cold is new. It sinks into him at a bone level, merciless. His coughing turns to drowning in cold, pale clouds, and he’s locked behind … ice? Glass? He doesn’t know, he’s gasping ... and then he wakes.

“They sleep wrapped close together, fierce, as if something is trying to pull them apart — ice, or thorns, or time.”

Love Among the Ruins is complete!

Stucky, eerie romance, historical psychiatry, angst + happy ending!

An amazing, delicious fic is being written by the wondrous @Cristinuke for RBB. I am lucky enough to have drawn art for it. Behold some .. snippet....

Soft Siberian Snuggling!!! :D

Chapter 15, Love Among the Ruins: “White Wolf”

‘For a moment, Bucky’s eyes are mischievous. ”Always so impatient, Rogers.”

Helplessly charmed, Steve shrugs, his cheeks warming.’

daphneblithe: sketch of Bucky Barnes by daphneblithe (Default)

A moment of wordless disbelief, then it’s Steve, wrapping around him, his huge body full length against his own, his mouth against his hair. It can’t be true. It is true. Steve’s real and warm, bright as flame.

… “Steve.” If relief could be a sound, it would be that syllable breathed from Bucky’s pale lips into the warm air.

Chapter 14 of Love Among the Ruins. “Golden.”

...aka Daphne Heads Towards the Happy in Angst-with-Happy-Ending!

I've painted two roses. WHAT CAN THIS POSSIBLY MEAN? :D

"Steve moves through the compound and it feels like a dream. He thinks of Sarah, haunted by grief, and of the Howlies, resilient but scarred, all of them, by the grinding cost of war.

He thinks of Bucky, beautiful and brave, stretching like liquid in the sunlight of their old apartment. Huddled in the Italian forest, broken beneath that tree.

He thinks of Bucky, falling."

Chapter 13 of Love Among the Ruins, Stucky mystery and eerie romance.

Rusalka. Bucky shivers. He knows that word. Spirits of water who want to make skin cold and wet and dead.
His mind is growing bleary, dark with dirty water.

Chapter 11, Love Among the Ruins, eerie romance, angst with happy ending, historically accurate psychiatry.

“This room must have been beautiful once. Now, the walls are encrusted with green damp and trees outside are reflected in a pool of water on the floor.

There’s nothing to do here but drown.”

Chapter 11 of Love Among the Ruins. “Sculpture.”

(I PAINTED WATER! It’s the third painting I have done, and I haven’t painted water before :D )

(This post just for people who have already read Chapter 1 to 11 of a fic of mine, Love Among the Ruins, and who want to have a version of chapter 12 without the darker sentences.  For those who want the entire thing, please go to AO3, here.)

“Sam’s transfixed by the sheer surreality of the flames, vivid against the darkened snow, random and beautiful. He swallows.

Riley would have liked it”

Some moments of beauty amid industrial parkour in industrial ruin – Ch.10 of Love Among the Ruins

(Some blissful Sam/Riley in this one!)

“To Steve, it’s starting to feel like a kind of a kind of … burial. Choosing to immerse himself in the detritus of the past instead of an unbearable present. Choosing ash and grime and broken things.”

Chapter 10, Love Among the Ruins (Stucky, historical accuracy, eerie psychiatry, angst with happy ending (& happy intervals ;) ) )

I just painted an A3 canvas of a flooded ruin from this:

for this: Love Among the Ruins (Stucky fic, historical accuracy, eerie psychiatry, Siberian angst).

The photographs in this book are AMAZING. She's an urbex photographer, roamed ex-Soviet regions and photographed ruined interiors. More of her work is here.

I LOVE the aesthetic of ruin and urban exploration, and I painted this setting based on photography of an ex-Soviet ruined abandoned hospital.

“Bucky glimpses weird grandeur, wide arched corridors with flaking, blue walls. The floors and ceilings are cracked and moldering. Electricity only works in parts of the site, and in some places, the smell of damp and ash and ruin is so thick that it makes him choke.”

Chapter 9, Love Among the Ruins.
daphneblithe: sketch of Bucky Barnes by daphneblithe (Default)

"He wants to melt like wax under the hard heat of Steve's body. He wants to feel Steve move inside him, work inside him, his large hands strong on him. His own body arches back like the stem of a flower. He’s yielding. Supplicant."
Chapter 9 of Love Among the Ruins,
historical accuracy, eerie romance

I got wondering about this after @hansbekhart made an amazing comment to me about that fic I wrote (sorry, I am mentioning that again, but this time in the service of something greater, i.e. hopefully finding out what YOUR answers are about your own process!).

Hans said:

"There's very much the feeling of a dream throughout the whole story, these sort of extra sensory, just off kilter details? Like the way you describe the light feels like a de Chirico painting to me."

I think that lovely analogy is spot on – the slightly surreal and sometimes oddly place-dislocatedness that’s in some de Chirico is v much in tune with what I am trying to capture!

And this got me thinking, what kinds of painting capture the writing experience for me – and I bet we all have different responses! What is yours?

For me, my writing process, and indeed my general aesthetic, feels like Caravaggio –vivid self-generated luminousness of the figures, against encroaching darkness (lol OK Angst-with-Happy-Ending is clearly where my heart lies):

(And on the subject of luminous foreground figures, the Pre-Raphaelites are obviously huge for this fic, given that I STEAL THE TITLE from one of them :rolls about ) Here’s a detail from Edward Burne-Jones’s painting, er, Love Among the Ruins.

(Sorry, Ed. :) )

“He can hear ghosts in that wind, but none are the ghost he dreams of.”

Let’s all go on a winter holiday – except it’s def. not a holiday and it’s Siberia.
Here, have 4,679 painstakingly-drawn pieces of barbed wire ;)

"Steven said, 'Why not write something that’s not so deep and meaningful?'

But the truth can be so tragic & beautiful."

  - Empathy Test, “Bare My Soul”

. . I can say the same about chapter 7 of my fic Love Among the Ruins tbh!  I’ll be honest, I’m nervous! I care so much about this chapter. It’s written in my heart’s blood. It is full of sadness, love, tenderness and comfort, Very creative comfort. <3

And… part of it involves poetry by Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. During the course of writing it I just had to set the poem to music, a blend of Gregorian plainchant and Celtic lament.  And it has been, er, sung.  And, er, it may now be in an embedded video at the end of Chapter Seven, ‘Night’. (Hides.)
