federated fandom thoughts
(I wrote this in a hubzilla-based thread, but am pasting a copy of it here too since I might as well do something with this dreamwidth account ;)
Thoughts inspired by
lim's amazing post about fediverse fandom.
That is an amazing post, a real Manifesto for Federated Fandom. I also feel like since this is still a very echoing and empty chamber (?) I shouldn’t pipe up with my random thoughts. I do have some though, and they are Hopeful.
I mean, I’m also acutely aware of what I keep calling the Lords of the Flies element of how things played out at Mastodon around Will Wheaton etc, but I genuinely think that, from my limited understanding, this federated thing could have the benefit of both OWNING THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION (*raises fist*) (as it were, sort of) and a semi-walled garden. (I know the latter metaphor is problematic -- even semi-walled gardens are highly problematic of course -- undemocratic, closed and entropic – but, damnit, I saw how purity culture played out on tumblr and I am dreaming of a world without quite that. SOME means of preventing harassment, anyway.)
Anyway, federated fandom lot -- my professional skills are all in words and cultural analysis rather than code, but if those are ever any use at all, You Have My Bow.
